3.1.5 - In summary of the approach

What are the key steps to engage your stakeholders throughout the approach?

The method defines the expected outputs, that is to say the messages and the contents to be conveyed as part of the Stakeholder engagement action.

Conversely, the method is intended to be flexible and does not impose specific means, tools or formats. Some resources are proposed in the annex to give some inspiring examples.

Here are the different recommendations that make it possible to comply with the requirements in terms of Stakeholder engagement actions:

🗓️ In summary of the approach

The method recommends facilitating this mobilization phase at the closing of thestep 6 - synthesis and reporting.

Initial level: criteria H1, I1 and J1

For this first maturity level, closing the approach is a key phase for mobilization. The messages and content to convey are:

  • For all internal stakeholders: A reminder of the key points of🧠awareness raising and outreach covered at the launch of the approach, to introduce the reporting elements. A 📢Reporting and communication of the results: simplified emissions profile, main assumptions, uncertainties and selected actions. A 🙋empowerment to give everyone a role in the success of the actions.

  • For all external stakeholders: A📢Reporting and communication : prepare a summary of the approach to send to stakeholders who request it, based on the results and deliverables obtained. Emphasize actions in particular rather than numbers.

👥 The stakeholders targeted here are therefore, at a minimum:

  • All internal stakeholders (project team, management, and all employees).

  • All of the organisation's stakeholders regarding the public communication of results.

☑️ [Examples and recommendations]

The method does not require the use of specific awareness-raising tools or formats, as long as the above messages are conveyed. Nevertheless several formats are proposed :

  • The communication kit, particularly suitable here.

  • Feedback workshop on impacts and selected actions (internal).

Standard level: criteria H2, I2 and J2

For this second maturity level, closing the approach is a key phase for mobilization.

  • For downstream external stakeholders (e.g. customers): A 📢Reporting and communication of the results: simplified emissions profile, main assumptions, uncertainties and selected actions. A 🙋empowerment to encourage them to carry out their own Bilan Carbone®, encourage good practices in the use of sold products.

  • For upstream external stakeholders (e.g. suppliers): A 📢Reporting and communication of the results: simplified emissions profile, main assumptions, uncertainties and selected actions. A 🙋empowerment to explain the co-benefits of the approach and highlight synergies (show how the company helps its supplier reduce its footprint and reciprocally).

  • For all external stakeholders: A📢Reporting and communication : publish a summary of the approach on its website, based on the results and deliverables obtained.

👥 The stakeholders targeted here are therefore, at a minimum:

  • All internal stakeholders (project team, management, and all employees).

  • A subset of external stakeholders: at least one external upstream or downstream stakeholder (customers or suppliers), depending on their impact in the Bilan Carbone®.

  • All of the organisation's stakeholders regarding the public communication of results.

☑️ [Examples and recommendations]

The method does not require the use of specific awareness-raising tools or formats, as long as the above messages are conveyed. Nevertheless several formats are proposed :

  • The communication kit, particularly suited here, to train employees in charge of communication, with "golden rules" (how to communicate, how not to communicate).

  • Internal feedback workshop on the impacts and the actions targeted by the organisation to reduce them, such as for example The Bilan Carbone® Workshop.

  • Creation of "post-assessment memo" communication materials (internal, management)

  • For external (upstream) stakeholders: transmission of a simplified summary, specific to the supplier footprint.

  • For downstream stakeholders: display the information at the time of purchase of the product/service. Link awareness raising & customer communication.

Advanced level: criteria H3, I3 and J3

For this third maturity level, closing the approach is a key phase for mobilization.

  • For downstream external stakeholders (e.g. customers): A 📢Reporting and communication of the results: simplified emissions profile, main assumptions, uncertainties and selected actions. A 🙋empowerment to encourage them to carry out their own Bilan Carbone®, encourage good practices in the use of delivered products.

  • For all external stakeholders: A 📢Reporting and communication : publish a transparent summary of the approach on its website (results, actions, and especially the methodology used).

👥 The stakeholders targeted here are therefore, at a minimum:

  • All internal stakeholders (project team, management, and all employees).

  • All external stakeholders

📊 For this Advanced level, specific messages must be adapted to the context and the organisation's profile. Compare the actions chosen in the transition plan to those of the sector or competitors where possible. Put into perspective according to the classification of “profiles” :

  • Profile or sector “lower emitter or decarbonising”: For an activity less emitting, the objective is to influence (mobilise its internal staff on reducing their professional and personal footprint, mobilise its upstream and downstream value chain in dialogue and the sharing of actions). The objective should not obscure the need to decarbonise (every degree and every tonne counts) nor to question its relevance in a low-carbon world.

  • Profile or sector “very emitting”: For an activity very emitting : the objective is the possible carbon gain and not the carbon result at time t. The organisation is expected to provide its transition plan and the scale of its decarbonisation, more than its current balance. The objective is to focus its efforts on its issues and significant categories.

  • Profile or sector “at risk”: For an activity "at risk" one must consider the need to change the business model, to change activities. Address actions, means to do so based on examples & lessons learned. The objective is to impact the organisation's overall vision and strategy.

  • For downstream stakeholders: display the information at the time of purchase of the product/service, for example on invoices, with a dual indicator (price and CO2e). Link awareness raising and customer communication.

  • For the entire value chain: connecting actors (workshop, debates, conference) with feedback, best practices, initiating "action" working groups.

🗓️ For the evaluation of the approach

Whatever the 3 maturity levels, the result of the evaluation of thestep 7 - evaluation and quality of the Bilan Carbone® is one more element that can be reported/communicated in the same way as the summary of the approach.
