3.1.3 - Upon completion of the GHG profile construction

What are the key steps to engage your stakeholders throughout the approach?

The method defines the expected outputs, that is to say the messages and the contents to be conveyed as part of the Stakeholder engagement action.

Conversely, the method is intended to be flexible and does not impose specific means, tools or formats. Some resources are proposed in the annex to give some inspiring examples.

Here are the different recommendations that make it possible to comply with the requirements in terms of Stakeholder engagement actions:

🗓️ For the construction of the GHG profile

The method recommends facilitating this mobilisation phase based on the emission profile obtained, therefore downstream of thestep 4 - accounting.

Initial level: criteria H1, I1 and J1

At the end of the phase of accounting for GHG emissions, a 📢Reporting and communication of intermediate results is expected. The messages and contents to be transmitted are:

  • Specific to the project team: reminder of the approach followed; technical presentation (validation of assumptions, activity data), presentation of the figures (overall GHGs – significant categories); involvement in subsequent phases (for example for the construction of the transition plan).

  • Specific to management: reminder of the objectives of the approach; popularisation of the results (overall GHGs – significant categories); reminder of ongoing actions within the organisation and of the organisation's strategy regarding the energy-climate transition (if it exists); involvement in subsequent phases (for example for the construction of the transition plan).

This exchange time allows a reminder of the key points of🧠awareness raising and outreach addressed at the launch of the approach.

👥 The stakeholders targeted here are therefore, at a minimum:

  • Project team and internal project coordinators

  • Management

The method does not require the use of specific awareness-raising tools or formats, as long as the above messages are conveyed. Nevertheless several formats are proposed :

  • Intermediate results presentation facilitation: may differ depending on the target (internal project team, or management). Volunteers can of course be invited.

  • Interactive online quiz formats are particularly suited to popularising the results and helping to appropriate the orders of magnitude.

Standard level: criteria H2, I2 and J2

At the end of the phase of accounting for GHG emissions, a 📢Reporting and communication of intermediate results is expected. The messages and contents to be transmitted are:

  • Specific to the project team: reminder of the approach followed; technical presentation (validation of assumptions, activity data), presentation of the figures (overall GHGs – significant categories); involvement in subsequent phases (for example for the construction of the transition plan).

  • Specific to management: reminder of the objectives of the approach; popularisation of the results (overall GHGs – significant categories); reminder of ongoing actions within the organisation and of the organisation's strategy regarding the energy-climate transition (if it exists); involvement in subsequent phases (for example for the construction of the transition plan).

  • Specific to other internal staff: popularisation of the results (overall GHGs – significant categories), bring the organisation's data closer to orders of magnitude, offer them to calculate their individual footprint, relate the organisation's issues to those of their daily lives, present the emission factors of their daily life.

This exchange time allows a reminder of the key points of🧠 awareness raising and outreach addressed at the launch of the approach.

👥 The stakeholders targeted here are therefore, at a minimum:

  • Project team and internal project coordinators

  • Management

  • Internal staff: Representative panel of those who will be consulted during the reflection and the construction of the transition plan.

  • It is optional but relevant to extend to other volunteer internal staff (employees, workers, volunteers).

The method does not require the use of specific awareness-raising tools or formats, as long as the above messages are conveyed. Nevertheless several formats are proposed :

  • Intermediate results presentation facilitation: may differ depending on the target (internal project team, employees, or management).

  • It is often relevant to couple this intermediate presentation with a time for debate on actions to reduce the footprint, consultation and reflection on the construction of the transition plan (detailed mobilisation phase in the following section).

  • Maximise interactivity, especially for staff: interactive online quiz formats are particularly suited to popularising the results and helping to appropriate the orders of magnitude.

  • It is possible to present the results with a quantified mapping of flows illustrative and educational, supplemented by the values emission values opposite the main flows. It serves as a visual basis for a better understanding of the results and the link between physical flows and GHG emissions.

Advanced level: criteria H3, I3 and J3

At the end of the phase of accounting for GHG emissions, a 📢Reporting and communication of intermediate results is expected. The messages and contents to be transmitted are:

  • Specific to the project team: reminder of the approach followed; technical presentation (validation of assumptions, activity data), presentation of the figures (overall GHGs – significant categories); involvement in subsequent phases (for example for the construction of the transition plan).

  • Specific to management: reminder of the objectives of the approach; popularisation of the results (overall GHGs – significant categories); reminder of ongoing actions within the organisation and of the organisation's strategy regarding the energy-climate transition; involvement in subsequent phases (for example for the construction of the transition plan).

  • Specific to other internal staff and external stakeholders: popularisation of the results (overall GHGs – significant categories), bring the organisation's data closer to orders of magnitude, offer them to calculate their individual footprint, relate the organisation's issues to those of their daily lives, present the emission factors of their daily life.

👥 The stakeholders targeted here are therefore, at a minimum:

  • Project team and internal project coordinators

  • Management, including managers or focal points of the various departments of the organisation

  • Internal staff: Extended and representative panel of those who will be consulted during the reflection and the construction of the transition plan.

  • External stakeholders: certain upstream or downstream external stakeholders (having a key impact on the value chain)

  • It is optional but relevant to extend to other voluntary stakeholders

📊 For this Advanced level, specific messages must be adapted to the context and the profile of the organisation. The GHG profile obtained here makes it possible to refine theidentification of risks and opportunities of the organisation, in particular on its dependence on fossil fuels and its vulnerabilities. This first classification of “profiles” allows adapting the messages conveyed during the presentation, between a “lower emitter” profile, “very emitting”, or “at risk”:

  • Profile or sector “lower emitter or decarbonising”: For an activity less emitting, the objective is to influence (mobilise its internal staff on reducing their professional and personal footprint, mobilise its upstream and downstream value chain in dialogue and the sharing of actions). The objective should not obscure the need to decarbonise (every degree and every tonne counts) nor to question its relevance in a low-carbon world.

  • Profile or sector “very emitting”: For an activity very emitting : the objective is the possible carbon gain and not the carbon result at time t. The organisation is expected to provide its transition plan and the scale of its decarbonisation, more than its current balance. The objective is to focus its efforts on its issues and significant categories.

  • Profile or sector “at risk”: For an activity "at risk" one must consider the need to change the business model, to change activities. Address actions, means to do so based on examples & lessons learned. The objective is to impact the organisation's overall vision and strategy.

  • Hold a dedicated day bringing together all stakeholders and allowing several sessions: appropriation workshops, deep dive on results and GHG profiles, and work on the actions to be launched.

  • It is often relevant to couple this intermediate presentation with a time for debate on actions to reduce the footprint, consultation and reflection on the construction of the transition plan (detailed mobilisation phase in the following section).

  • Presentation of results with a quantified mapping of flows illustrative and educational and/or a analytical mapping.

  • Foster acculturation on the translation to individual carbon footprint: some examples here.
