Classification of organisation profiles

Different organisational profiles should be taken into account to adapt the messages conveyed. They can be divided by sector & activities, or at least between:

  • Profile or sector “less emitting or that decarbonises”

  • Profile or sector “very emitting”

  • Profile or sector “at risk”

This classification remains subjective, but it can be based on the framework proposed below.

Being in a sector less emitting does not mean that the organisation is actually low-emitting. This classification must be analysed with regard to the organisation's actual activity. Theidentification of risks and opportunities, and the analysis that may follow according to the organisation's maturity, shall precisely enable this classification to be considerably refined.

For the maturity levels Beginner and Intermediate, the messages are rather universal. The adaptation of the message becomes increasingly specific and ambitious as the organisation gains maturity.

A specific focus is necessary from the Advanced level, as presented below:

“less-emitting” profile
“very-emitting” profile
“at-risk” profile

For an activity less emitting, the objective is to influence (Stakeholder engagement of internal employees on reducing their professional and personal footprint, Stakeholder engagement of the upstream and downstream value chain in dialogue and the sharing of actions)

For an activity emitting activity : the objective is the possible carbon gain and not the carbon result at time t. The organisation shall be assessed on its transition plan and the scale of its decarbonisation, rather than on its current assessment.

For an activity "at risk" one must consider the need to change the business model, to change activities. Address actions and means to do so using examples & lessons learnt.

The objective shall not obscure the need to decarbonise (every degree and every tonne matters) nor to question its relevance in a low-carbon world.

The objective is to focus efforts on its significant issues and emission categories.

The objective is to affect the organisation's overall vision and strategy.

⏳[WIP] A table will be made available soon to serve as a reference and help users classify themselves into one of these profiles (less-emitting, very-emitting or at-risk). The objective of this resource is to integrate into Stakeholder engagement a section “what transition risk for your sector”. All of these resources are under production. They will be made available between September and December 2024.

Version 9 of the method is in an experimental phase until 31/12/2024. The tools and training will come into effect on 01/01/2025. Until then, we welcome your feedback or questions on this form. To learn more about the facilitation programme around the release of the method, click here.
