One of the fundamental aspects of the Bilan Carbone® method is transparency throughout the entire calculation process, from the choice of boundaries to the means of communication to Stakeholders.

The[evaluation](https://www.bilancarbone-methode.com/methode-bilan-carbone-r-en/appendices/glossary#evaluation-dun-bilan) of a Bilan Carbone® thus guarantees the reliability of the results. It also makes it possible to identify blocking points and areas for improvement between two assessments of an organisation. The evaluation is a voluntary step with two objectives:

* [Verify ](https://www.bilancarbone-methode.com/methode-bilan-carbone-r-en/appendices/glossary#verification)that the assessment complies with the requirements of the Bilan Carbone® method
* Confirm the maturity level of the organisation performing its assessment (this point can be useful to know which complementary approach to the Bilan Carbone® can be initiated afterwards)

The organisation shall:

* [Step 7.1](https://www.bilancarbone-methode.com/methode-bilan-carbone-r-en/7-evaluation-and-quality-of-bilan-carbone-r/7.1-prepare-the-evaluation-of-its-assessment) : prepare the evaluation of its assessment (contract with an authorised evaluation team and assemble the deliverables for the evaluation)
* [Step 7.2](https://www.bilancarbone-methode.com/methode-bilan-carbone-r-en/7-evaluation-and-quality-of-bilan-carbone-r/7.2-the-evaluation-process) : understand the evaluation process
* [Step 7.3](https://www.bilancarbone-methode.com/methode-bilan-carbone-r-en/7-evaluation-and-quality-of-bilan-carbone-r/7.3-evaluation-result) : understand the result of the evaluation

> :mag\_right: *The evaluation of the Bilan Carbone® follows the process described in the* [*Guide for the evaluation of a Bilan Carbone®*](https://www.bilancarbone-methode.com/methode-bilan-carbone-r-en/appendices/bibliography#labc-et-les-ressources-complementaires-au-bilan-carbone-r)*. This process is also detailed in the subsection "*[*The evaluation process*](https://www.bilancarbone-methode.com/methode-bilan-carbone-r-en/7-evaluation-and-quality-of-bilan-carbone-r/7.2-the-evaluation-process)*" of this guide and is freely accessible for organisations wishing to*[*Self assessment*](https://www.bilancarbone-methode.com/methode-bilan-carbone-r-en/7-evaluation-and-quality-of-bilan-carbone-r/7.3-evaluation-result)*.*

## Glossary related to Evaluation

All terms related to the steps of boundary identification are explained in the [glossary](https://www.bilancarbone-methode.com/methode-bilan-carbone-r-en/appendices/glossary). They are reminded below:

* Evaluation of assessments: Process ensuring the reliability and transparency of assessments and their results. It also makes it possible to identify blocking points and areas for improvement between two assessments of an organisation. The evaluation includes the verification and validation of assessments. The evaluation of the Bilan Carbone® follows the guidelines described in the [Guide for the evaluation of a Bilan Carbone®](https://www.bilancarbone-methode.com/methode-bilan-carbone-r-en/appendices/bibliography#labc-et-les-ressources-complementaires-au-bilan-carbone-r).
* Validation of assessments: Evaluation of effects that have not yet occurred, concerning the assessed assessment. For example: the validation of the transition plan (concept originating from[ISO 17029](https://www.bilancarbone-methode.com/methode-bilan-carbone-r-en/appendices/bibliography) and ISO 14066).
* Verification of assessments: Evaluation of effects that have already occurred, within the scope of the assessed assessment. For example: verification of the data used in the calculation of the GHG profile, verification of the results obtained, verification of uncertainties, among others (concept originating from[ISO 17029](https://www.bilancarbone-methode.com/methode-bilan-carbone-r-en/appendices/bibliography) and ISO 14066).
* Self assessment: Monitoring the evaluation process of a Bilan Carbone® internally and autonomously, using the evaluation guide available freely. Self assessment therefore does not use the evaluation process by an authorised evaluator (trained and certified). A self assessment allows internal use: target whether certain criteria of the targeted maturity levels are met or not, progress in continuous improvement, check the relevance of initiating an external evaluation, confirm internally its maturity and therefore the interest of following up with complementary low-carbon transition approaches. A self assessment does not allow declaring its Bilan Carbone® approach as evaluated, nor to communicate the obtained result externally.
* Evaluation team: Group of people responsible for the verification and validation of the assessment. The whole team meets the competencies and principles required [hereafter](https://www.bilancarbone-methode.com/methode-bilan-carbone-r-en/7-evaluation-and-quality-of-bilan-carbone-r/7.1-prepare-the-evaluation-of-its-assessment). The evaluation team is led by an evaluation lead, who directs the evaluation of a given assessment, ensures its proper conduct and establishes the final evaluation report. They may be accompanied by various experts according to the complementary skills necessary for the proper conduct of the evaluation process.

## Governance related to Evaluation

The governance of the evaluation step is part of the [overall governance](https://www.bilancarbone-methode.com/methode-bilan-carbone-r-en/1-framework-for-the-approach/1.2-define-the-management-of-the-bilan-carbone-r-approach) of the Bilan Carbone® approach presented previously. It is the coordinator who leads the preparation of the deliverables necessary for the evaluation, and liaises with the evaluation team.

As the evaluation is carried out by independent third parties (see the[evaluation team](https://www.bilancarbone-methode.com/methode-bilan-carbone-r-en/7-evaluation-and-quality-of-bilan-carbone-r/7.1-prepare-the-evaluation-of-its-assessment)), the carrying out of this step is necessarily outsourced by the organisation targeted by the GHG assessment.

## Stakeholder engagement related to Evaluation

A [Stakeholder engagement action](https://www.bilancarbone-methode.com/methode-bilan-carbone-r-en/3-stakeholder-engagement/3.1-schedule-the-stakeholder-engagement-phases) is possible at the end of step 7. It aims at the [Reporting and communication](https://www.bilancarbone-methode.com/methode-bilan-carbone-r-en/3-stakeholder-engagement/3.1-schedule-the-stakeholder-engagement-phases/3.1.5-as-a-summary-of-the-approach) around the results of the evaluation, summarising the approach.

## Requirements related to Evaluation

As a reminder, step 7 is voluntary: there is no specific requirement associated with the evaluation. On the contrary, it is the evaluation that will be able to verify the achievement of all the [requirements](https://www.bilancarbone-methode.com/methode-bilan-carbone-r-en/1-framework-for-the-approach/1.1-define-your-bilan-carbone-r-maturity-level#comparatif-des-criteres-des-niveaux-de-maturite-pour-lamelioration-continue-du-bilan-carbone-r) for each of the maturity levels.

## **Deliverables** related to Evaluation

The information and deliverables to be provided for the evaluation are detailed [here.](https://www.bilancarbone-methode.com/methode-bilan-carbone-r-en/7.2-the-evaluation-process#pieces-justificatives-et-livrables-pour-levaluation)

The information and deliverables obtained at the end of the evaluation are:

* [x] A [evaluation report](https://www.bilancarbone-methode.com/methode-bilan-carbone-r-en/7.2-the-evaluation-process#rapport-devaluation)
* [x] A [evaluation certificate](https://www.bilancarbone-methode.com/methode-bilan-carbone-r-en/7-evaluation-and-quality-of-bilan-carbone-r/7.3-evaluation-result)
